Hormones have a huge impact when it comes to our wellbeing. Yet they are often dismissed or missed out in favour of the more ‘trendier’ wellbeing points, like exercise and sleep. Which are all vital in our overall health. Hormones though have a large arena to work from, they affect our energy, protects your organs, supports cell growth, keeps cholesterol and blood pressure under control, and helps your body absorb vital nutrients and affect our mood as well as impacting our overall health.

When we talk about hormones, we are not talking about our sex hormones either, although they do play a part. We have so many in our body that a lot of people forget, these include adrenaline, insulin, cortisol, thyroid, and sex hormones (oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone).

When these hormones are in-active or low, the changes to our moods, body is radical and can have life changing consequences and why, where possible we need to balance these out as naturally as possible by consuming the right healthy fats. Over the years, fats have been given a bit of a bad reputation due to it being associated with being overweight. However, our body needs healthy fat to function properly. Our hormone production and function need healthy fats to such as those found in omega-3 fat sources, because they help rebuild cells.

Fat also helps us to feel fuller for longer after a meal, reducing our cravings for sugar and carbohydrates. We also need healthy fats so that we can absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K.

In addition, our bodies can't produce its own essential fatty acids—they must come from the foods we eat. Our skin relies on these dietary fats to play several crucial roles. Omega-3 fatty acids are a component of the cell walls in the top layers of your skin, where they help prevent moisture loss and maintain a plump appearance.

The important thing when choosing the right fats is to avoid processed fats as found in processed foods. The focus should be on natural un-processed foods, such as nuts avocado, and cold pressed oils.
