Hikers Hot Chocolate Recipe

April 17, 2020

This might sound like a slap to the face and its really not meant to be, but one day we will be allowed to go out into the countryside and hike, climb, run, walk to our hearts content, but before then, we will have to make the most out of our time that we can go out and find the time to walk near to our homes or better yet, go camping in the garden. Nevertheless, this hikers hot chocolate is great to have in your back pocket, wherever you go...

Packed with fabulous ingredients, you can pop it in a flask and voila, all set and ready for when you need a quick top up, or a sit down to enjoy and savour the views and fresh air (even if its your garden!). This is not a thick drink, this is more in keeping with tea or coffee but with a refreshing chocolate flavour. Packed with refreshing ingredients to give this a lift.

Ingredients

Depending on your flask - (I use a 250ml so ingredients will be based off these)

25g 80Noir Ultra beads

100 hot oat milk

150ml hot water

Grated lemon and orange rind

A small pinch of Licorise powder (yes, its controversial but trust me it really adds the background notes to balance it out from the zing of fruit thats missing) you can get it here

A dollop of honey (added sugar on your walk/hike/run - optional)

Instructions

1. Heat the water to 80 degrees - you don't want to burn the milk or water as it will take away the nutrients we are wanting to keep from the chocolate.

2. Add the lemon and orange rind - be quite generous, we want  a pop of fruity zingy-ness

3. Add half a teaspoon of licorise powder (sounds like a lot but its a subtle flavour) and stir it all together with a whisk so it mixes through.

4. Once you have raised the temperature so its a rolling boil, take it off the heat, let it cool for a minute or so, then add the chocolate and stir with a whisk (hand held is perfect for this and adds to the nostalgia of packing for a day out - or does for me).

5. Once combined - this is where you add the honey -add to taste and whisk...

6. Pour through a sieve to remove the grind and leave a silky smooth fruity refreshing hot chocolate with oodles of nutritional benefits. Pour into your flask and on your merry way you go, knowing you have something to look forward to when you get half way!

Benefits

Lets start with the sides...

Licorice is used to soothe gastrointestinal problems. In cases of food poisoning, stomach ulcers, and heartburn, licorice root extract can speed the repair of stomach lining and restore balance. This is due to the anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties of glycyrrhizic acid. I Know a lot of people aren't fans but if you get the best quality then i promise, it is a world away from the sweet shop version.. For me Lakrids from Denmark is the best, and every time i go there, I stock up! Don't eat too much as, as with everything too much is never good for us.. Moderation is key.

Lemon and Orange Rind have a high nutritional value (please make sure you wash beforehand), it may help your oral health (who doesn't want a fruity breathe!), packed full with antioxidants and may help boosts your immune system. Lets not forget the pure taste, its like eating sunshine with the sea lapping at your toes.

Honey - High-Quality Honey Is Rich in Antioxidants and considered *less bad* for diabetics. Another powerhouse for antioxidants that can help lower blood pressure, help improve chloesterol and help lower Triglycerides - which are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals.

and finally the joyous CHOCOLATE

The wonder that is Epicathechin, which is a compound classed as a flavonoids found in dark chocolate, that enhances muscle growth and strength naturally via a novel pathway, increasing nitric oxide production for improved vascularity, blood flow and enduranceImproving insulin sensitivity, regulating blood sugar levels and stimulating muscle protein synthesisLowering cholesterol levels due to its natural antioxidant propertiesImproving brain and heart health. Basically it helps you work harder for longer and perfect for those long hikes, endurance days or if you have a super busy day and need every energy cell you have to work at its best.
